Thermal Test of Synchronous Generator

The function of the thermal test of a synchronous generator set is to obtain the temperature values of components such as motor windings, collector rings, commutators, and bearings when they operate under specified working conditions and reach a stable temperature rise through the test. It can inspect whether the insulation materials and production processes of the tested motor meet the requirements, enabling the motor to work normally and better prolong the service life of the unit.

There are two thermal test methods for synchronous generators: direct loading method and indirect loading method. The direct loading method can be further divided into the full-load direct loading method and the reduced-load direct loading method. The indirect loading method can be divided into the low power factor loading method and the no-load short-circuit method.

 

1.Direct Loading Method

When conducting the test using the synchronous feedback direct loading method, two motors need to be connected mechanically and electrically. When the tested motor operates as a generator, the auxiliary motor operates as a motor, and vice versa, which can be used for the thermal tests of synchronous generators and motors simultaneously. During operation, the electrical energy generated by the generator is fed back to the motor, and there are two methods to provide the energy consumed by the above two motors as follows:

Method 1: Provided by a third synchronous motor. When coupled with a coupling, this motor should be double-shaft extended, and its rated speed should be the same as that of the tested motor.

Method 2: Provided by a power supply. The frequency and voltage should be exactly the same as those of the tested motor, and appropriate measures need to be taken to prevent harmful electrical or mechanical transient processes when the motor reaches the rated speed.

 

2.Reduced-Load Direct Loading Method

When conducting the thermal test under reduced load, the power factor of the tested motor should be equal to or close to the rated value. After obtaining the temperature rise values of windings, iron cores, and related components at each load, plot the relationship curves between temperature rise and the square of winding current or the losses of the components. Extend these curves upward smoothly to the rated load point of the tested motor, and obtain the temperature rise value at the rated load point through the coordinates.
