The Rotational Inertia of Diesel Generator Set Flywheel

Mar. 23, 2023

The rotational inertia of the rotating shafting moving part assembly of a diesel generator set is a very important parameter, which is indispensable in the analysis of the speed governing characteristics of the set and the vibration analysis of the shafting of the set. Before applying a generator set, it is necessary to determine the rotational inertia of the flywheel. Starlight believes that the following factors should be considered during the determination process.

diesel power generator

(1) For diesel generator sets, in the vast majority of cases, it is a diesel generator directly driven generator; The rotational inertia of the generator rotor is usually proportional to the power of the generator. Therefore, when considering the rotational inertia of the flywheel, based on the power of the diesel engine and the power of the complete set of units, the rotational inertia of the generator rotor behind the flywheel and the connecting part between the diesel generator and the generator should be considered and reserved in the rotational inertia of the complete set of units. After deducting the rotational inertia other than the flywheel of the diesel engine, the remaining part will be supplemented by the flywheel of the diesel engine.

(2) For series diesel generators, the design of flywheel inertia should not only consider the needs of the entire machine, but also consider minimizing the specifications and varieties of the flywheel to facilitate production management. From the above calculation, it can be seen that the rotational inertia of the complete machine calculated by the formula is the minimum rotational inertia required to achieve a certain degree of rotational non-uniformity. In engineering design, it is generally necessary to make the rotational inertia of the complete machine reach and slightly exceed the calculated value. In this way, it is possible to reduce the variety of flywheel configurations, that is, for models with small differences in the overall configuration inertia, a flywheel can be used. Taking the L+V20/27 series diesel engine as an example, there are 18 models with two calibrated rotational speeds of 1000r/min and 900r/min, and only 5 types of flywheels are configured

The factors that need to be considered in designing the rotational inertia of the flywheel are relatively professional. Starlight recommends that you consult professional technicians. When purchasing power generation equipment, you can ask the manufacturer for a detailed explanation, laying a foundation for your future good application. Of course, there are many factors that need to be considered in order for the crew to achieve the best results. Starlight will continue to introduce it to you, please continue to pay attention.
