Proper Preheating Operation of Diesel Generator Sets

Diesel generator sets are an important choice for emergency and backup power supplies. If the unit cannot be preheated, it will directly affect the unit's hot standby and emergency start-up, leaving safety-related equipment in the process system without backup power protection. For generator sets equipped with preheaters, personnel can decide whether to perform preheating operations based on the ambient temperature before starting. The diesel generator control panel with a preheating button can control the unit to start heating to achieve the preheating target and protect the unit, which is the correct operation.

The heaters of diesel generator sets can be divided into three types:

(1)Water jacket heater: When the mains power is cut off and the generator set is correctly connected, it is used to automatically heat the unit's coolant. When the unit is in standby mode, the device automatically detects the coolant temperature. When the temperature is lower than the factory-set limit, it will automatically energize for heating. It will automatically stop heating when the temperature rises to about50℃. The water jacket heater is a necessary accessory for units in cold areas where freezing may occur. When the unit is running, the water jacket heater must be stopped, otherwise the heater may be burned out. The heaters installed and matched by Dingbo Power have been designed with relevant control functions in the control circuit, and the heater power supply is automatically cut off when starting.

(2)Anti-condensation heater: When the unit is used in an environment with high humidity, an additional anti-condensation heater should be installed. Excessive humidity may cause rust on the contacts and lines of the unit's circuit board, and its power supply is generally the unit's starting battery.

(3)Air preheater: Its function is to specifically heat the air entering the combustion chamber to increase the starting success rate when the unit is started. It increases the complete combustion of the mixture of air and fuel when entering the combustion chamber. When the unit starts normally and the starting motor has withdrawn, the air preheater will automatically stop working. The power supply of the air preheater is generally the unit's starting battery.

Generator set preheating: After the diesel engine starts, the no-load running time should not exceed 5 minutes, and then the speed can be gradually increased to1000-1200R/MIN, and then enter partial load operation. The diesel engine can be put into full load operation only when the outlet water temperature is higher than75℃, the oil temperature is higher than50℃, and the oil pressure is higher than0.25MPA.

In winter, when starting a diesel generator set at low temperatures, start-up failure may occur, and correct preheating operations help the diesel generator start and achieve the purpose of normal use of the generator set.
