Precautions for Generator Set Transformer Maintenance

May. 14, 2025

There are many precautions to take when using a generator set, and there are also many components that need to be maintained. For example, one of the components we'll talk about today, the transformer, requires a lot of attention during maintenance. Many people may wonder how to maintain a single component. After reading the explanations from the technicians of our diesel generator set manufacturer today, we believe it will be helpful to you!

The faults of the generator set transformer include phase - to - phase short - circuits, ground short - circuits, turn - to - turn short - circuits, disconnections of the windings, as well as burnout of the iron core and faults of the bushings and lead - out wires.

The transformer should be taken out of service for the following abnormalities:

① The transformer catches fire or smokes.

② The terminals overheat and fuse, resulting in open - phase operation.

③ The shell cracks and a large amount of oil leaks (for wet - type transformers).

④ The bushing has serious cracks and discharge phenomena, etc.

When a fault occurs outside the transformer, a large short - circuit current will flow through its windings, causing the transformer temperature to rise. Long - term over - loading or over - excitation operation of the transformer will also cause overheating of the windings and the iron core and damage to the insulation.

For a generator that has not been used for a long time, its insulation condition should be checked before use. When tested with a resistance meter, it can be used only if its insulation resistance is not less than 1 megohm; otherwise, it must be dried. The instruments used with the generator should be calibrated regularly to prevent malfunction. The generator should also have a good grounding device.

Before starting the generator, check the cleanliness, connection of joints, and insulation condition of each part. Check whether the distribution device and control equipment are normal, whether the carbon brushes are stuck, and whether the bolts of each part are tightened. In addition, the commutator or slip ring should be wiped clean with a cloth. After the generator starts and runs, people should not touch the high - voltage lines and any live parts. If you need to test whether it is live, you can use a test pen or an instrument. Moreover, no maintenance, cleaning, repair, or adjustment work can be carried out during operation. During the entire operation process, the operator should often pay attention to the sounds of each part of the generator, carefully observe the instruments, and notice whether there is any overheating phenomenon in the rotating parts such as the bearings. If the generator does not work properly, it must be stopped immediately. Find out the cause, eliminate the fault, and then continue to work.
