Parallel Conditions and Characteristics of Diesel Generator Sets

Diesel generator sets can operate either as a single unit, in parallel with multiple units, or be integrated into the power grid. The operation of a single unit is subject to many limitations. If its power is designed to meet the requirements of heavy - load conditions, the operating economy of the unit will decrease during light - load operation. Moreover, the standby unit needs to have the same capacity as the operating unit. Four conditions must be met for parallel operation

①The terminal voltages should be equal.

② The frequencies should be equal.

③ The phases should be consistent.

④ The phase sequences should be consistent. Diesel generator sets have the following characteristics:

② The thermal efficiency of diesel - engine power generation is relatively high, and the change in fuel consumption per unit output is not significant under partial - load or light - load conditions.

③ The starting, load - taking and stopping times of diesel generator sets are relatively short. They can be started at any time, making them more suitable as emergency power sources.

④ The operation and maintenance of diesel generator sets are simpler and more convenient compared with steam - turbine generator sets.

However, diesel generator sets also have some disadvantages:

① They can only use liquid fuel, and the fuel price is relatively high, so the cost of electricity is high.

② Diesel engines have greater wear, shorter service lives, more frequent overhauls, and their operation stability and overload capacity are worse than those of steam - powered devices.

③ There is significant vibration and noise during the operation of the unit, resulting in poor working conditions for workers.

④ A braking coil must be installed on the surface of the generator's magnetic poles to facilitate the starting and stopping of the unit.
