1.Weight and Overall Dimension Indicators

The weight and overall dimension indicators can be used to evaluate the structural compactness and metal material utilization rate of a diesel engine. Different types of diesel engines have different requirements for overall dimensions and weight.

(1) Weight Indicator

The weight indicator of a diesel engine is the ratio of the net weight Gw of the diesel engine to the rated power Pe, that is, gw=Gw/Pe (kg/kW). The net weight of the diesel engine does not include auxiliary equipment and systems not directly installed on the internal combustion engine body, such as fuel, lubricating oil, and cooling water. The weight of the diesel engine is affected by its type, structure, size of accessories, materials used and manufacturing technology.

(2) Overall Dimension Indicator

The overall dimension indicator is also called the compactness indicator, which refers to the compactness indicator of the overall layout of the diesel engine. It is usually determined by the power per unit volume of the diesel engine. The power per unit volume PV is the ratio of the rated power Pe of the diesel engine to the external volume V of the diesel engine, that is, Pv=Pe/V kW/m³. In the formula, V=LBH, where L, B and H are the maximum length, width and height dimensions of the diesel engine.

2.Exhaust Pollution Indicator

Diesel engine exhaust contains small amounts of harmful emissions, including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. These combustion products are emitted into the atmosphere, polluting the environment, endangering human health and causing social hazards.

With the enhancement of environmental awareness, the restrictions on diesel engine exhaust pollution are becoming increasingly strict. The national standards implemented in China have the following restrictions on carbon monoxide emissions from diesel engines: When Pe＞300kPa, the NOx limit is 29g/kW·h when ge≤214g/kW·h; when ge=214-268g/kW·h, the NOx limit is 14-25g/kW·h; when ge＞268g/kW·h, the NOx limit is 11g/kW·h.
