1. Function of Ignition Coil

The function of the ignition coil in a diesel generator is to convert the input voltage from the battery into high-voltage electricity, serving as a voltage boosting component. It typically consists of primary winding, secondary winding, iron core and other components.

2. Types of Ignition Coils

There are mainly two types: closed magnetic circuit ignition coils and open magnetic circuit ignition coils. They are introduced respectively as follows.

 

3. Winding Differences Between the Two Types of Ignition Coils

The iron core of the open magnetic circuit ignition coil is made by stacking many silicon steel sheets coated with insulating material. The secondary and primary windings are mainly on the cylindrical iron core. The primary winding of the ignition coil uses enameled wire with a diameter of 0.5 - 1mm, and is wound 240 - 370 turns on the outside of the secondary winding's insulation layer. The secondary winding is wound with enameled wire of 0.06 - 0.10mm in diameter on the insulating paper.

 

For the closed magnetic circuit ignition coil, both the primary winding and the secondary winding are wound on a square or Japanese - shaped iron core.

 

4. Working Principles of the Two Types of Ignition Coils

(1) Principle of Open Magnetic Circuit Ignition Coil

For better heat dissipation, the primary winding is wound outside the secondary winding. Both windings are wrapped with insulating paper layers. The primary winding also needs to be equipped with a magnetic conductive steel sleeve to reduce magnetic resistance, facilitate heat dissipation into the outer shell, and be supported on the magnetic insulating seat. One end of the secondary winding is welded to one end of the primary winding, and the welding point is inside the ignition coil. The other end of the secondary winding is connected to the high - voltage wire connector in the center of the bakelite cover. The two ends of the primary winding are respectively connected to the low - voltage terminals. After filling the shell with moisture - proof colloidal insulating material or transformer oil, it is covered with a bakelite cover and sealed.

 

(2) Principle of Closed Magnetic Circuit Ignition Coil

The open magnetic circuit ignition coil adopts a cylindrical iron core. The magnetic flux generated by the primary winding in the iron core forms a magnetic circuit through the magnetic conductive steel sleeve. However, the magnetic lines of force at the upper and lower parts of the iron core pass through the air, resulting in large magnetic resistance of the magnetic circuit, much leaked magnetic flux, large magnetic circuit loss and low conversion rate. The closed magnetic circuit ignition coil makes the magnetic flux form a closed magnetic circuit through the iron core, so as to reduce the leakage of magnetic flux and the loss of the magnetic circuit, and improve the utilization rate of the ignition coil.

 

If a diesel generator fails to ignite, you can check whether the engine oil has been updated and filled in a timely manner. Generally, it is more appropriate to update it every three months, and it needs to be filled according to requirements. If these requirements are met, you need to check whether the spark plug is sparking. If it is not sparking, you need to dip some engine oil on it and then install it, and then it can ignite successfully.
