How Does A Generator Generate Electricity

May. 20, 2023

Generators are widely used power generation equipment in the world, mainly used as emergency backup power sources for telecommunications, finance, national defense, hospitals, schools, commercial, industrial and mining enterprises, and residential areas. So how does the generator work? Do you want to learn more? Below, the editor of Starlight Power will explain to everyone.

The generator, which is often referred to, mostly refers to the diesel generator set, which is a power supply equipment driven by the diesel engine to drive the AC synchronous generator and generate electricity. It consists of components such as a diesel engine, an AC synchronous generator, a control box (screen), a coupling, and a common base.

Firstly, it is necessary to understand the working principle of a generator: we all know a physical phenomenon, which is that a coil rotates in a magnetic field and moves to cut magnetic lines of force. Under electromagnetic action, an induced current is generated in the coil, which in simple terms generates electrical energy. The generator is designed and manufactured based on this principle, but it is relatively complex, but the basic principle is the same.

The rotor of the generator is a magnetic pole, and there is an excitation winding inside the rotor. When direct current is applied, it will excite and generate a magnetic field, which in simple terms becomes an electromagnet. The equipment that generally supplies direct current to the rotor is called an exciter, which is connected to the rear of the generator. Its function is to generate direct current during operation and supply it to the rotor excitation coil for use, in order to generate a magnetic field. This method of supplying direct current is called separate excitation in the electrical field, and there is also a self excitation method, which is to use the alternating current generated by the generator instead of the exciter. After being rectified by the excitation transformer (silicon rectifier), it is converted into direct current and supplied to the rotor coil for use. By the way, the carbon brushes on the generator rotor that we often see are devices that supply DC power to the rotor. When the DC power supply to the generator is too large, the carbon brushes are prone to sparking.

There is a three-phase symmetrical winding embedded in the stator core of the generator, which is commonly known as the stator coil. When the generator is working, the turbine drives the generator rotor (magnetic pole) to rotate, causing the stator coil winding to continuously cut the rotor magnetic field and induce three-phase AC electromotive force, which generates electricity.

The above is the generator power generation principle explained by the editor of Jiangsu Starlight Electricity Equipments Co.,Ltd., hoping to be helpful to everyone.
