Difficult Start The Diesel Generator Cold Start in Low Temperature Areas

In winter in the northern regions or western plateau areas of China where the ambient temperature is low, it is difficult to start construction machinery or diesel generators. The main reasons are as follows: at the end of the compression stroke in the diesel engine cylinder, the air temperature fails to reach the level required for starting, and the pressure of the compressed air in the cylinder is also significantly lower than the required starting pressure. The optimal operating temperature of a battery is between 20 - 40℃.

For the 150kW Guilin Weichai generator set, the lower the temperature, the more difficult it is to start the diesel generator set. There are mainly three reasons for this:

1. Poor diesel atomization

When the temperature drops, diesel with a label not matching the temperature may wax, resulting in poor atomization during fuel injection and making it impossible to start the generator set. The solution to this problem is to select diesel with a suitable label according to the lowest temperature of the day and other conditions.

2. Battery capacity issue

When the battery temperature drops, its capacity will significantly decrease for the following reasons. A reduced battery capacity means it cannot drive the starter motor, making it difficult to start the diesel generator set. To address this issue, Dingbo Power suggests appropriately increasing the battery capacity when choosing a battery. In this way, even if the battery capacity decreases, there will still be enough capacity to drive the starter motor.

(1) The electrolyte is not easy to diffuse, and the chemical reaction rate of the active substances at the two electrodes slows down.

(2) The impedance of the electrolyte increases, the battery voltage drops, and the 5 - hour rate (5HR) capacity of the battery decreases as the battery temperature drops.

3. High oil viscosity

Similar to the diesel atomization problem, it is recommended to select engine oil that meets the requirements and conditions, or use an external water - jacket heater to heat the engine oil and other liquids to avoid the problem of difficult starting of the diesel generator set.

Common cold - start methods for diesel generators

1.Select diesel engine oil with good low - temperature performance. This type of oil has low viscosity at low temperatures, provides good lubrication between friction pairs, and has low starting resistance, which is conducive to starting.

2.Use a battery with good low - temperature performance. If necessary, insulate the battery to ensure normal charging and current output under low - temperature conditions, thereby improving the power of the starting system.

3.Add cold - start fluid.

4.Use pre - heating for starting.

5.Adopt a circulating water heating system (also known as a fuel heater heating system).

6.Other pre - heating methods: In addition to the above pre - heating methods, hot - water pre - heating, steam pre - heating, electric pre - heating and other methods can also be used for starting.
