Diesel Generator Set Voltage Specifications and Regional Voltage Differences

Oct. 31, 2025

As is well known, the operational stability of electrical equipment is closely related to voltage, and the same applies to diesel generator sets. Excessive voltage fluctuations can not only affect the service life of diesel generators but also potentially damage the equipment. To ensure safe and stable operation, voltage fluctuations must be kept within specified limits. However, voltage standards for electrical equipment vary across countries and regions. For example, China uses 380V/50Hz for industrial power and 220V/50Hz for household use, while other regions have completely different voltage systems. These variations in equipment and regional requirements result in differences in diesel generator set voltage configurations.

Regional Voltage Differences

United States: 120/240V (single-phase), 208/240V (three-phase), 60Hz

Canada: 120/240V (single-phase), 208/240V (three-phase), 60Hz

Japan: 100/200V (single-phase), 200V (three-phase), 50Hz

South Korea: 220V (single-phase), 380V (three-phase), 60Hz

Brazil: 110/200V (single-phase), 380/460V (three-phase), 60Hz

Mexico: 127/220V (single-phase), 220V (three-phase), 60Hz

Given these regional differences, diesel generator set voltages must be adjusted accordingly. However, there are general specifications for generator voltage:

Voltage Regulation Standards

The rated capacity of the generator can be maintained if the voltage variation is within ±5% of the rated voltage.

When the voltage decreases by 5%, the stator current increases by 5%; conversely, a 5% voltage increase leads to a 5% decrease in stator current.

Diesel generators should operate continuously at the rated voltage, with a maximum allowable voltage of 110% of the rated value. Exceeding this limit may cause the following issues:

Increased rotor excitation current, potentially raising rotor winding temperature above rated levels.

If rotor current remains unchanged, higher voltage requires reduced power output.

Elevated stator core magnetic flux density can cause core saturation, increasing end leakage flux and overheating metal components in the generator end structure.

Overvoltage operation poses a risk of breakdown to the stator winding insulation.

Therefore, understanding voltage-related professional knowledge is essential for proper operation of diesel generator sets, which helps extend their service life.
