For diesel generator sets, the oil level should be slightly below the upper mark on the dipstick. The oil level must not be too low or too high, as both conditions can easily lead to generator set failures.

Risks of Overfilling Oil

It is incorrect to assume "more oil is better." Overfilling oil can cause the following four hazards:

1.Increased Leakage and Consumption: Excess oil may leak from the front and rear ends of the crankshaft, increasing oil consumption, polluting the environment, and complicating maintenance.

2.Reduced Mechanical Efficiency: When the generator operates, the crankshaft agitates the excess oil, causing it to foam and deteriorate. This increases crankshaft rotation resistance. Additionally, a high oil level hinders connecting rod movement, further reducing mechanical efficiency.

3.Accelerated Wear and Carbon Deposits: Excess oil can flee to the combustion chamber, leading to increased oil consumption. Burning oil forms carbon deposits on piston rings, piston tops, valve seats, and fuel injectors. This exacerbates wear between pistons and cylinder liners, valves and valve seats, and may cause piston ring sticking or injector clogging.

4.Crankcase Fire Risk: Agitation by the connecting rod big end can generate oil mist from the high oil level. This mist may ignite at high temperatures, causing crankcase failures. This not only wastes oil but also increases operational risks.
