Causes and Effects of Frequency Fluctuations

Compared with the mains power, even the largest - output - power generator sets are insignificant. Due to their limited output power capacity, they have adaptability requirements for the input power, high - order harmonic components of the input current, and input power factor of the load. Otherwise, both the electrical equipment and the generator set will be in a poor working state.

Causes of Voltage and Frequency Fluctuations

When the engine drives the generator to generate electricity, the three - phase windings in the stator output voltage and current to the load in sequence at an electrical angle of 120°. Generally, when electrical equipment with an input power equivalent to about 60% of the generator set's output power is connected to the output end of the generator set, obvious or even strong frequency and voltage fluctuations will occur. This is because the load needs to draw a large current at this moment, resulting in a sharp increase in the current in the three - phase windings. The strong electromagnetic force generated by this current attracts the generator rotor, causing its speed to slow down, and the frequency and voltage to drop instantaneously. It can be seen that the amount of current required by the electrical equipment when connected is the key factor for whether it and the generator set can be in a normal working state.

Effects and Countermeasures of Frequency Fluctuations

Frequency fluctuations not only affect electrical equipment but also interfere with the working state of the generator set itself. When the generator set in the data center is switched on by the ATS to supply power to the UPS, frequency fluctuations of varying degrees occur. This will inevitably interfere with the UPS, which relies on the input voltage frequency and phase to regulate the output value of the circuit (rectifier circuit) or change the circuit working state (bypass system). Some may cause the whole machine to be in a poor working state, and in severe cases, it may cause the whole machine to stop working.

In fact, the impact of frequency fluctuations on the UPS and the generator set is also relative. Appropriately selecting the power ratio between the two is an effective countermeasure. The experience gained in actual work is that for high - frequency UPS with an input power factor close to 1 and high - order harmonic components of the input current less than 10%, when its input power is less than 80% of the rated output power of the generator set, frequency fluctuations will not affect normal operation. For power - frequency UPS, the input power should be less than 55%.
