Diesel Generator Frequency Stabilization Device 1

May. 08, 2025

Diesel generator sets are often used as backup power sources in data centers and work in conjunction with UPS to form a complete uninterruptible power supply system. However, due to their technical and structural characteristics, when connecting or disconnecting heavy loads, both voltage and frequency fluctuations occur. In particular, frequency fluctuations often interfere with electronic equipment such as UPS more severely than voltage fluctuations. In this article, we will introduce a new technology for reducing frequency fluctuations in diesel generator sets - the frequency stabilization device and its maintenance experience. Let's take a look.

Technical and Structural Characteristics of Diesel Generator Sets

A diesel generator set (hereinafter referred to as the generator set) is a machine in which the crankshaft (main shaft) of a diesel engine (hereinafter referred to as the engine; since diesel engines have greater power than gasoline engines, medium - and large - sized generator sets all use diesel engines) is rigidly connected to the rotating shaft (rotor shaft) of a synchronous generator (hereinafter referred to as the generator) to rotate at the same speed and synchronously generate electricity. In order to have sufficient power to drive the generator to generate electricity, the output power of the engine is 1.6 - 2 times greater than that of the generator. This is called the matching ratio.

According to technical and structural requirements, unless otherwise specified, the main shaft speed of engines specially used for generator sets is 1500 r/min (25 r/s). This is because of the structural characteristics of the three - phase windings of the generator stator and the rotor excitation winding in the middle. When the engine drives the rotor shaft to rotate, the electromagnetic field of the excitation winding on the rotor sweeps across the three - phase windings, and the frequency of the voltage generated by the windings is exactly 50 Hz, which meets the national power standard.

This means that the output frequency of the generator is determined by the engine speed. To ensure that the generator set can maintain a stable output frequency within the rated output power range regardless of load changes, a frequency stabilization device must be used to regulate the engine speed in real - time.

Application of Parallel - Operating Unit Monitoring Cards in Diesel Generators

Parallel operation of diesel generator sets is often used for redundant power supply to improve power supply reliability or for capacity expansion of existing units. In parallel operation, each generator set is required not only to have the same phase sequence of the output voltage but also to have equal amplitudes, frequencies, and phases of the output voltage. Moreover, the active and reactive powers of the shared load should be evenly distributed among each generator set. The parallel - operating unit monitoring card installed in each generator set collects the above six data in real - time. According to the optimal parallel - operation data model and algorithm, it calculates and deduces these data to obtain the most appropriate adjustment amount to regulate the unit itself, ensuring it is in a good parallel - operation state. At the same time, it also transmits these data to other generator sets for synchronization.

The stability and synchronization of the output frequency of each generator set are one of the important conditions for parallel operation. The cause of frequency changes is the change in active power caused by the connection and disconnection of loads connected to the shared output busbar of parallel - operating units. Since active power is formed by the resistance in the load consuming the output current of the generator, the change in current causes a change in the attractive force of the generator stator electromagnetic field on the rotor, that is, a change in the generator speed, which is also a change in the output frequency or phase.
