Asphalt-impregnated mica insulation is based on mica, with mica serving as the asphalt adhesive. Asphalt rubber performs better but has a long service life, with no serious internal corrosion. Compared with the previous paper tape as cushion reinforcing material, glass fiber has better heat resistance. Using glass fiber fabric as reinforcing material improves both the heat resistance and mechanical properties of the insulation. The development of adhesives for mica products has mainly gone through shellac varnish, alkyd varnish, epoxy tung oil anhydride adhesive, asphalt varnish, epoxy polyester varnish, and silicone varnish. Improvements in insulation structure make the new insulation have more excellent performance than previous insulations. Although the main component of mica insulation products is mica, in the entire insulation composition, the adhesive is the main factor affecting the electrical, mechanical properties and quality of the insulation tape, and also determines the heat resistance grade of mica insulation.
