Asphalt-impregnated mica insulation is based on mica, with mica serving as the asphalt adhesive. Asphalt rubber performs better but has a long service life, with no serious internal corrosion. From the dissection of old retired bars in the past, it can be seen that the insulation layer is shelled with large gaps; some large gaps can even fit a steel ruler. Shellac mica baked insulation foil rolls use natural mica shellac adhesive, formed by hot pressing without vacuum treatment. After solvent evaporation, the shellac can maintain the insulation gap. These two types of insulation are basically no longer used for generator insulation.
In the development of high-voltage motor insulation, other materials have been used to replace mica, but without success. Currently, epoxy glass mica is commonly used for large generator insulation, with powdered mica as the base material, glass cloth or polyester fiber felt as the reinforcing material, and epoxy resin adhesive system as the binder. The main insulation characteristics of current thermosetting adhesives are conventionally used in shellac and substituted asphalt coatings, rather than conventional glass cloth mica paper or paper lined with reinforcing materials.
Compared with the previous paper tape as cushion reinforcing material, glass fiber has better heat resistance. Using glass fiber fabric as reinforcing material improves both the heat resistance and mechanical properties of the insulation. The development of adhesives for mica products has mainly gone through shellac varnish, alkyd varnish, epoxy tung oil anhydride adhesive, asphalt varnish, epoxy polyester varnish, and silicone varnish. Improvements in insulation structure make the new insulation have more excellent performance than previous insulations. Although the main component of mica insulation products is mica, in the entire insulation composition, the adhesive is the main factor affecting the electrical, mechanical properties and quality of the insulation tape, and also determines the heat resistance grade of mica insulation.
