Cummins Generator Set System Configuration and Commissioning

To fully utilize a Cummins generator set, a basic understanding of its supporting systems is essential. Below is an overview of the components and commissioning procedures for Cummins generator setsystems:

1. Parallel Operation System

Conditions for Parallel Operation: Consistent voltage, frequency, and phase sequence.

2. Pre-Parallel Preparation:

Connect the generator to the parallel cabinet’s output cables; verify phase sequence consistency.

Install control lines from the generator to the parallel cabinet; check proper grounding of the generator. All generator sets must have independent grounding, interconnected as a system.

Install the generator’s parallel current transformer (CT). For Marathon alternators, install the CT on the T2 phase (use the unit’s CT).

Set initial parameters for:

AVR voltage drop compensation

Load sharing controller

Speed governor (set speed and voltage adjustment potentiometers to mid-position).

 

3. No-Load Commissioning:

Start the generator set: Adjust frequency to 50Hz/60Hz and voltage to 390VAC/380VAC.

For GAC18M672 controllers, adjust the voltage between terminals 15-23 to 5.02VDC.

Verify phase sequence consistency across all units.

After completing the above:

Manually connect the first unit to the grid.

Select the standby unit via the synchronization switch, activate the synchroscope, and set the standby unit’s manual/automatic switch to "Automatic." The generator will automatically synchronize and connect to the grid.

 

4. Load Commissioning:

Apply 30-50% load to each unit individually; adjust voltages to be consistent under the same load. If adjusting voltage drop compensation alters no-load voltage, re-calibrate no-load voltage and repeat load testing until both no-load and load voltages meet requirements.

Note: Voltage regulators have varying load curves; adjustments should typically target the customer’s commonly used load range.

Parallel the units under load; check power and current matching. If power distribution is uneven, adjust the load sharing potentiometer on the controller to balance power output. Gradually increase load and rebalance as needed.
