Carburetor Replacement Issues and Maintenance for Gasoline Generators

Jul. 23, 2025

Frequently, people ask, “I replaced the carburetor of my gasoline generator with a new one, but it seems to consume more fuel than before. Why?” Those who ask such questions surely think that new is always better than old. But is that really the case?

If you think so, you're wrong, because there's a matching issue between the carburetor and the engine. For each type of gasoline engine, the manufacturer needs to match the carburetor comprehensively, including performance aspects such as starting, idling, transition, acceleration, high - speed operation, as well as indicators like fuel consumption and emissions. Only when the design indicators are met can it be used. Before each machine leaves the factory, it also needs to be tested, and some carburetors may need fine - tuning to adapt to the matched gasoline engine. Therefore, it's not uncommon for the fuel consumption to increase after replacing the carburetor. If you replace it with the original - factory carburetor, there's still a possibility of deviation, but it will be less.

So, what problems might your gasoline generator encounter if you replace it with a mismatched carburetor? The following are common situations:

(1) Difficult starting.

This may be caused by the air - fuel mixture being too lean or too rich.

(2) Unstable operation.

(3) When the load is added and the throttle opening suddenly increases, the carburetor may backfire or the engine may stall directly. It can run normally again after the load is removed.

(4) The machine overheats seriously, the exhaust temperature is high, and the exhaust pipe may turn red.

(5) After starting the generator set, the exhaust pipe emits black smoke, sometimes there may be backfiring, the exhaust smell is pungent, and the exhaust is uneven.

(6) Fuel consumption increases and power decreases.

(7) There is carbon deposition on the spark plug, and sometimes the spark plug is obviously wet.

Now, many people don't pay attention to the maintenance of generators when using them. They think it's too troublesome and just leave it alone after use. They believe that it doesn't cost much to replace a damaged part. However, this may increase the hidden costs during use. So, replacing with new parts isn't necessarily a good thing, and maintenance is still very necessary.

So, how to maintain the carburetor of a gasoline generator? In fact, it's the maintenance of the entire fuel and intake system.

(1) Before each use, check if the air filter element is too dirty. Clean the air filter element every 50 hours of use or every 3 months (whichever comes first).

If it's a sponge filter element, you can clean it in warm water with household detergent or use a non - flammable cleaning solvent. Then squeeze it dry. Drop a few drops of clean engine oil on it and squeeze it dry again.

If it's a paper filter element, gently tap it first and then blow it with compressed air from the inside out. Don't use a brush to clean it, as it may clog the filter element. If the paper filter element can't be cleaned properly, it needs to be replaced with a new one.

(2) Clean the fuel filter cup every 100 hours of use or every 6 months (whichever comes first).

(3) Clean the fuel tank and the filter screen every two years. If it's found to be too dirty, clean it immediately.

(4) If the machine won't be used for a long time, drain the fuel in the fuel tank, clean the fuel filter cup, unscrew the drain screw of the carburetor, and drain the fuel in the carburetor.

In addition, don't use gasoline with impurities or expired gasoline during use.
