Carbon Brush Malfunction Analysis and Solutions

Carbon brushes are devices that transfer energy or signals between the stationary and rotating parts of electric motors, generators, or other rotating machinery. They are typically made of pure carbon mixed with a binder, usually in a block shape, clamped in a metal holder with a spring that presses them firmly against the rotating shaft. As sliding contact components, carbon brushes are widely used in various electrical equipment. The main materials include electrographite, resin-impregnated graphite, and metal (copper, silver)-graphite composites.

During normal operation, slight sparking caused by continuous sliding friction of carbon brushes is normal. However, if excessive sparking occurs immediately after replacing with new carbon brushes, accompanied by accelerated brush wear or even rotor burnout, it is necessary to identify and eliminate the fault causes promptly. Dingbo Power analyzes the main reasons for these phenomena as follows:

1.Uneven spring pressure on the diesel generator set's carbon brushes: Adjust the pressure appropriately to ensure uniform pressure across all brushes.

 

2.Carbon brushes have specific requirements for current conduction and friction speed: If the brushes are too hard or of incorrect type, replace them with appropriate models, ensuring high-quality carbon brushes are selected.

 

3.Loose brush holders in the diesel generator set: Tighten the brush holder screws to maintain parallel alignment with the commutator.

 

4.Poor contact between carbon brushes and commutator: This can cause rapid wear and excessive sparking. Under normal conditions, the contact area between the brush bottom surface and commutator should exceed 85%. If not meeting technical requirements, use fine sandpaper on the commutator surface to grind the brush contact surface into an arc shape.

 

5.Misalignment of the diesel generator set's carbon brush holder: Adjust the brush holder to the correct position.

 

6.Short circuit: A common issue requiring regular circuit inspections. Excessive brush wear reduces current, preventing generator startup. Replace brushes when wear exceeds 2/3 of their length (when the brush top aligns with the holder top).

 

Regardless of the cause of carbon brush wear, timely correction and preventive measures should be implemented to ensure proper equipment operation.
