The water pump of a diesel generator forces cooling water to circulate in the cooling system to cool the engine and prevent overheating damage. Understanding its working principle and structure is essential for maintaining diesel generators.

Inspection Steps for 50KW Diesel Generator Cooling System Water Pump

1.Check Pump Casing and Impeller

The pump casing must not have severe cracks. Cracks longer than 30mm or extending to the bearing seat hole edge are unacceptable. If cracks meet the repair criteria repair with brass alloy brazing rod after preheating the casing to avoid post-welding deformation. Replace the casing if criteria are not met. The impeller is only acceptable with one damaged blade replace if two or more blades are damaged.

2.Check Fit Between Pump Shaft and Impeller Hole

The pump shaft and impeller hole use an interference fit. If loose repair by increasing the shaft diameter via tin plating. After assembly the impeller end face should protrude 0.1–0.5mm above the pump shaft.

3.Inspect Pulley and Bearing Condition

During engine operation the water pump pulley must not wobble excessively. Potential causes are loose bearing or worn pulley taper sleeve and woodruff key. For pump shaft and bearing wear axial movement must not exceed 0.30mm and radial movement must not exceed 0.05mm otherwise replace the bearing. Replace the pulley taper sleeve and woodruff key if worn.

4.Examine Rubber Ring Seat in Pump Casing

Check for spots or abrasions on the rubber ring seat. Minor wear can be smoothed with a file or lathe.

5.Check Bearing Wear

Radial clearance must not exceed 0.10mm and axial clearance must not exceed 0.30mm otherwise replace the bearing.

6.Inspect Water Seal

Replace components if rubber gasket is worn/grooved spring tension is weak or rubber sleeve is swollen/damaged. Slightly worn rubber gaskets may be reused by flipping or grinding flat.
